What is an API key, and why do I need one?
It’s a key from your account with an AI provider, such as OpenAI or Anthropic. APTAKE uses it to send your requests to that provider. You pay the provider directly for what you use. APTAKE does not resell AI access.
Can you see my projects or chats?
Not through the app. APTAKE has no account system and we run no server for it, so the app does not send your projects to us. When you send a request, the provider you chose receives your message and the items you allowed, and then its own policy applies.
What happens if a chat is deleted at the AI provider?
If a chat or project is deleted at your AI provider, or your account there is blocked, the copy you saved in APTAKE stays on your device.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes, with your device’s protection. On iPhone and iPad, Apple Data Protection encrypts the app’s files when a passcode is set. On Mac, turn on FileVault. API keys are stored in the Apple Keychain and sent only to the matching provider.
What works without internet?
Projects, chats, files, notes, decisions and earlier AI answers open and can be searched offline. New cloud AI answers, web search and image generation need a connection. A local model on your Mac can answer without internet.
Which AIs can I use?
Cloud: OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), xAI (Grok), Mistral and Perplexity—each with your own API key. For models you fine-tuned in Tinker: Thinking Machines · Tinker. Local: models in Ollama or LM Studio. You can switch between them in the same chat. Available models depend on the provider, your API account, region and key.
How do I connect a local AI?
Start Ollama or LM Studio with the model you want on your Mac. In APTAKE, open the Local AI settings, enter the server address and choose the model. You install the models yourself—APTAKE doesn’t download them. On iPhone or iPad you need your Mac’s address on your network: “localhost” on a phone means the phone itself.
Does APTAKE work with Cursor?
Yes, by manual transfer. Choose the decisions, messages and notes you need, review the text, then copy it or save it as Markdown for a Cursor chat or your repository. There is no automatic connection yet.
Can I take my work with me?
Yes. Export a readable copy as PDF, HTML, Markdown, text or RTF, which opens in Word. For a full portable chat, choose .trkchat. You can save a backup in the Files app or iCloud Drive. API keys are not included in these files.
What is a .trkchat file?
The full portable APTAKE chat file: one ZIP package with the messages, readable HTML and Markdown copies, source links, attached files and checksums. APTAKE on another device can check the package before importing it.
Does APTAKE work with Notion or Obsidian?
Yes, through files for now. Export a chat as Markdown for Obsidian, or as Markdown or HTML for Notion, and open it in that app. One-tap sending is planned.
Which devices and languages are supported?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, and Mac with Apple silicon. The interface is translated into 18 languages; translation quality is reviewed separately for each language. There are no Windows or Android versions yet.
Is it a subscription?
No. At launch we plan a free trial, then a one-time purchase. We’ll announce the price before launch.
Does my ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro plan cover APTAKE?
No. APTAKE works through an API key. OpenAI and Anthropic bill API use separately from chat subscriptions. Add a payment method in the provider’s API account and pay for what you use.
What doesn’t APTAKE do yet?
Direct export to Word (.docx) isn’t available yet—RTF opens in Word and Pages. There is no automatic sync between devices: a backup is a file you keep yourself. There is no spreadsheet editor. There is no built-in AI model: you need a provider key or a local server. There is no automatic connection to Cursor. There are no Windows or Android versions yet.
